Obituary for Dino Morgoglione

Dino Morgoglione
Dino Morgoglione died peacefully on September 23, 2017. He was born in New York City on February 15, 1925. His early years were spent in Manhattan, the son of a doctor who had his practice on the first floor of their brownstone. At an early age, his parents encouraged him to take up the piano, and Dino pursued music with a zeal that led him to play at Carnegie Hall at the age of nine under Arturo Toscanini.
At age ten the family moved to Italy to care for Dino's ailing grandparents. There he was introduced to the sport of soccer, which would become a lifelong passion. At age 13, he earned a spot on the Youth Squad of the Naples Professional Club, traveling to compete in central and southern Italy. At age 17, he was promoted to the club’s reserve team where he was called into action when members of the premiere team were injured.
Dino’s rise into the ranks of professional soccer was cut short by World War II. When the Germans occupied Italy, reinstated Mussolini, and ordered all males age 15 – 65 into labor camps, Dino reported as instructed. But when the men were lined up and began the rainy march through Naples, he slipped out of the ranks and into the crowd of jeering Italian citizens that lined the sidewalks. He walked into the crowd where a kind older gentleman hid Dino behind his umbrella, then led him to his home. He kept himself hidden from the Germans until the Allies arrived in Naples in 1943. Fluent in both English and Italian, Dino worked with Allied Forces as a translator.
Returning to America in 1946, Dino began his career in the clothing industry and earned a spot on the New York Americans semi-pro soccer team. He played soccer from 1948 – 1952, when he was transferred by the McGregor Sportswear Company to Maryland’s Eastern Shore. There he met Carolyn and they were married in 1955. Daughter Terri was born in 1956, son Greg in 1957, and in 1963 Dino accepted a position with Aileen Manufacturing. The family relocated to Winchester, and the children attended Powhatan School in Boyce, VA. Carolyn began a 40 year career at Powhatan in 1965, teaching as well as serving as Head of Lower School and Assistant Head of School.
At Powhatan Terri and Greg began to play soccer, and Dino soon discovered that some local men were playing pick-up games at Daniel Morgan School. He joined them and his passion for the sport was quickly rekindled. In 1976 he formed a men's team, and with assistance from a few of the players a youth soccer organization came to life the following year. From that humble beginning the Blue Ridge Youth Soccer Association (BRYSA) was born. BRYSA, now 40 years old and going strong, engages over 1,400 area youngsters with 116 recreational and Winchester United traveling soccer teams.
By the late 1970's Dino had obtained his real estate license and was establishing himself in the profession that would sustain him into his final years. An early pioneer of buyer representation, Dino earned his Broker's license and formed his own company, A Buyer's Broker, in Winchester. Throughout his 40 year career Dino worked tirelessly to help countless community members realize their dream of home ownership.
Dino was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Winchester, where he served on the Vestry and as a Lay Minister. Funeral services will be held at Christ Episcopal Church on Friday September 29th at 2:00 p.m., followed by a reception in the Parish Hall.
Preceded in death by his parents Teresa and Alberto Morgoglione, and his sister Luigia (Gina) Miller, Dino is survived by his wife Carolyn, sister Silvia and her husband Marshall, daughter Terri, son Greg, daughter-in-law Lynn Sigman, son-in-law Jack Schutte, and grandchildren Elizabeth and Clay Schutte.
The family wishes to thank Jim Carden, Dr. Fred Kozlowski and staff, and the countless friends, professionals, and community members who have supported them through Dino's final months; and Blue Ridge Hospice for their compassionate care of Dino in his final days. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made in Dino's honor to the Blue Ridge Youth Soccer Association, P.O. Box 2865, Winchester, VA, 22604.
