Obituary for Fenton Babcock

Fenton Babcock, 91, of Winchester, VA, died Wednesday, December 6, 2017 at his residence. Fenton was born May 30, 1926, in Aberdeen, WA, the son of the late Thorpe and Mabel Spencer Babcock. He was preceded in death by his brother Milton and his sister Dorothy.

He served in the US Navy during WWII. After the war he went to Yale University and ultimately obtained his PhD. While at Yale, he married the late Elizabeth (Haya) Vorwerk. During their 55 years of marriage they traveled the world together. After Haya’s death he was married to Evelyn Valotto for seven year before her death. Fenton worked as an Intelligence Officer for the Central Intelligence Agency until his retirement.

Fenton loved sailing and being on the water. He built a sailboat with his brother when they were young. While at Yale he was on the lightweight crew, and later coached crew there as well. Fenton also loved being outside where he enjoyed planting trees and rebuilding old stone walls. Most of all he loved sharing time with his family and friends.

He is survived by one daughter, Ann B. Walters and her husband, Harry G. Walters III, of Gainesville, VA; step son Merle Fallon and his family of Nokesville, VA, two grandsons, a grand daughter-in-law, and one great-grandson.

A Memorial Service will be held on December 30, 2017 at 11am at Shenandoah Valley Westminster Canterbury (SVWC) in Winchester. Burial will be private at a later date.
