Obituary for Joan Pauline Bettendorf (Milstead)

Joan Pauline  Bettendorf (Milstead)
Joan Pauline Milstead Bettendorf was born June 18, 1932 in Columbia Women’s Hospital in Washington, DC and she died peacefully at home in Winchester, VA on April 24, 2017. Joan was predeceased by her parents, Herbert C. and Agnes Hurst Milstead, her sister Shirley Wolz, and her brother Thomas Milstead. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Philip E. Bettendorf and her five children: Pauline Bettendorf Reale (Thomas), Valerie Bettendorf Spargo (John), Philip E. Bettendorf, Jr. (Christie), Mary Bettendorf Reese, and Hugh J. Bettendorf (Allison). Joan also leaves behind four grandchildren: Joan Reale Cikmis (Alen), Emily Bettendorf Riley (Thomas), Mary T. Spargo, Philip P. Reese and five great grandchildren: Carter Cikmis, Sophia Cikmis, Savannah Riley, Thomas Riley, Jr., and Ella Cikmis. Joan is also survived by many nieces and nephews. During her lifetime, Joan was a homemaker, active in her community, and Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic church. Joan was on the Parish Council of Catholic Women, a member of the Altar Society and an 18 year Eucharistic Adorer. For over 20 years, Joan hosted a luncheon on St. Joseph’s Feast Day where she collected food for the poor. In the community, Joan shared her love for depression era glass by being one of the founding members of the Valley Glasshoppers Club. She was also a long time volunteer (25+ years) at the Winchester Memorial Hospital and Winchester Medical Center. Family will greet visitors at Jones Funeral Home on Friday, April 28, 2017 from 6 – 8PM. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on April 29, 2017 at 10AM at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Winchester, VA. Final internment will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Winchester, VA. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to New Eve Ministries (a shelter for expectant mothers), P.
