Obituary for Marlin Gordon "Monk" Leatherman

Marlin Gordon “Monk” Leatherman, 69, of Winchester, VA passed away on Monday, March 6, 2017 in the Winchester Medical Center.
He was born on August 6, 1947 in Hagerstown, MD; the son of William J. and Mary J. Jones Leatherman. He was a Major (Ret) with the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Kernstown United Methodist Church, Boy Scouts of America Shenandoah Area Council and the Rotary Club.
During his 20 years of service with the U.S. Army, Monk received numerous awards, including three Bronze Star Medals and the Soldier’s Medal, the highest honor a soldier can receive for an act of valor in a non-combat situation. He dedicated his life to the Boy Scouts, participating as a boy or leader for 62 years. While a Scout, Monk earned the prestigious William T. Hornaday Award, became an Eagle Scout, and was bestowed the Vigil Honor of the Order of the Arrow. As an adult, he led numerous Cub packs and Scout troops, as well as serving his district as a commissioner, on the Eagle board, and as the chairman of the Shenandoah Area Council’s National Eagle Scout Association Committee.
Surviving Monk are his children, Matthew Leatherman of Fairfax, VA, Michael Leatherman of Bremerton, WA and Adam Leatherman of Winchester; sister, Susan Leatherman and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his son, Thomas Jacob Leatherman and his brother, William Leatherman.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, March 11, 2017 from 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. at Jones Funeral Home.
A graveside service will be held on next Saturday, March 18, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in Mt Hebron Cemetery with Pastor Aaron Fitch officiating.
A memorial service will be conducted in the spring, at Camp Rock Enon.
