Obituary for Mary Porter "Portia" Hamman (Jarrell)

Mary Porter “Portia” Hamman, 87, of Winchester, died Friday, November 23, 2018 at Dutch Haven Assisted Living.
Mrs. Hamman was born January 15, 1931, in Charlottesville, VA; the daughter of the late Emmanuel Magustas and Mary Link Jarrell. Portia graduated from Strasburg High School and studied Psychology in college. She married Paul Frederick Hamman on October 2, 1948 in Strasburg . He preceded her in death in 1997. She was a seamstress and milliner (hat maker) and owned and operated The School of Sewing Arts. She also co-owned Interstate Transmissions. Portia was a long time Winchester Medical Center Auxiliary volunteer and patient advocate, a member of Woodmen Life, and a member of the Strasburg Seventh Day Adventist Church.
She is survived by her two sons, Stephen Wayne Hamman, and wife, Elaine, of Winchester and Phillip Anthony Hamman, and wife, BJ, of Dover, Delaware; a daughter, Linda Hamman Hoover, and husband, Jim, of Winchester; a brother, Emmanuel “Snooks” Jarrell, Jr. of Burr Hill, VA; five grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one great granddaughter.
There will be a Celebration of Life Service at a later date.
