Obituary for Harry Carl Nissen

Harry Carl Nissen age 91 of Winchester, VA died on April 15, 2016 at home. Mr. Nissen was born on November 22, 1924 in Chicago, IL. He was the son of the late Harry C. and Ellen B. Nissen.
He is survived by his wife Myrtle “Myrt” Nissen whom he married in 1980, his daughter Katherine Swank and husband Robert of Vincennes, IN; his daughter Elizabeth Goodrich and husband John of Stow, OH; his step-son Thomas Hally and wife Janet of Bethlehem, PA; 10 grandchildren Sarah Garman and husband Trevor, Kate Hunt and husband Tod, Virginia Quinn and husband Tom, Amy Grace Duncan and husband Chris, David Swank and wife Hannah, Elizabeth Wingerter and husband Seth, Ryan T. Hally and wife Tracy, Carolyn Paddock and husband Matt, Mark Hally and wife Kathy, Scott Hally, and 11 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Doris Procter of CA; 3 nephews and 2 nieces.
He was an Ensign in the US Navy and served on the USS Hornet Air Craft Carrier in World War II. He graduated from UCLA with a BS in Chemistry in 1949 and also graduated from Bucknell University with a MS in Chemical Engineering in 1951. He was a member of the American Chemical Society and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.
Mr. Nissen was employed as a Chemical Engineer for US Metals, National Lead Company, and Lockheed Electronics in NJ. He retired in 1988. He also worked for H&R Block in NJ and VA.
After moving to Winchester, VA in 1996, he was the first President of the Woodbrook Village Homeowners Association and also served on many committees. He was a member of Opequon Presbyterian Church, Kernstown, VA. He was also a member of the American Legion.
Mr. Nissen was preceded in death by his first wife Virginia Long Nissen, one sister Margy Bassett, and one step-son Wayne T. Hally.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held in the chapel at Shenandoah Memorial Park at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 21, 2016 with Pastor David Witt officiating.
