Obituary for Anne Pettit Massie (Pettit)

Anne Pettit Massie, 86, of Cross Junction, Virginia, died peacefully Sunday at her home on 31 January 2021.

She was born November 28, 1934, in Richmond, VA, the daughter of Charles T. and Charlotte A. Pettit. Anne was a champion Dressage rider and instructor for more than 25 years and led a successful Hanoverian horse breeding business in Catharpin, VA. She was also a celebrated and gifted portrait and landscape artist and studied at the Corcoran School of Art, the Torpedo Factory, and the Art Students League in Alexandria, VA. She produced over 150 paintings in her career and continued her painting until her passing. Her legacy for others to enjoy for many years to come.

Anne married George Bernard Massie, MD, on December 17, 1968, in Alexandria, VA; he preceded her in death on April 15, 2003.

She has three surviving children, David G. Vieira of Fairfax, VA, Taylor C. Vieira of Bradenton, Florida, and Thomas D. Massie of Chantilly, VA; six grandchildren; a brother G. Rogers White of Richmond, VA, and a cousin, Edmund Ruffin, of Virginia Beach, VA.

A memorial service is on Saturday, February 6, 2021, at 1:00 pm at Jones Funeral Home in Winchester, with Pastor Sue Adams officiating.
