Obituary for Elizabeth Jane "Lib" Gamble (Kohler)

Elizabeth Jane "Lib" Gamble (Kohler)
Elizabeth Kohler Gamble (100) of Winchester, Virginia died peacefully on November 8th in the care of Shenandoah Valley Westminster-Canterbury. She was born on September 7, 1922, the oldest child of Dr. Milton Kohler and Margret O’Neill Kohler. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 57 years, James Graham Gamble, and her four brothers, Francis, Milton, William, and Joseph. She is survived by her sister Margaret Glock and also her four children and their spouses: Joan Kenimer (Robert), of Rising Fawn, Georgia; Jane Miller (Stephen), of Martinsburg, West Virginia; James Gamble V (Cynthia), of King George, Virginia; and Eileen Sipple (Jerry) of Bethel, Ohio. She is survived by seven grandchildren (and spouses where so indicated): Kathleen (Anthony) Petito, Matthew Jager, Laura (Andrew) Rixham, Daniel (Laurie) Miller, Charles (Alison) Miller, Kira Fox, and Deanna (Andrew) Kollman. She was great grandmother to seven children.

Elizabeth was a child raised during the Great Depression and by the example of her parents and the extended family, she learned the value of family, home, church, God, hard work and education. After graduation from Westmont-Upper Yoder High School, she attended Westminster College, where she met her future husband in the college band where he played the flute and she played piccolo. Due to the war, she was not able to finish college, but he did graduate and joined the United States Air Force. They were married in Washington D.C, where she performed secretarial work for the war effort, while he trained as a B-17 pilot.

When the war finally ended, they traveled where the Air Force sent them. This included two years in Tokyo, Japan followed by several assignments in the United States and Stephenville, Newfoundland. With every move, Elizabeth would make a comfortable home for her family, which at that time, included two children. When James retired from the Air Force, the family grew to four children and lived in Clinton, Maryland. The northern United States had always appealed to them, so they packed up and moved to Pittsfield, New Hampshire for five years. When they got tired of chopping wood and shoveling snow, they moved south to Farmville, Virginia, which was their final home.

In 2003, Elizabeth moved to Shenandoah Valley Westminster -Canterbury where she lived for 19 years. Her family is grateful for the loving and professional care. she received.

Mass of Christian Burial was performed by Father Vaccaro at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Winchester, VA on Saturday, November 19th at 1PM. Inurnment will be in Grandview Cemetery, Johnstown, PA at a later date.
