Obituary for Garland Edward Miller Sr.

Garland E. Miller, Sr., 76, of Winchester, died Wednesday, February 26, 2020 at Blue Ridge Hospice where his family kept a constant vigil by his side.

Mr. Miller was born June 27, 1943 in Frederick County, VA; the son of the late Carl H. and Hildred Roomsby Miller. He was a 1961 graduate of James Wood High School. After high school graduation, he proudly served in the US Army stationed in Europe.

On August 23, 1964, he married the love of his life, Carol Bennett Miller, in Frederick County, Virginia.

He leaves behind his wife, who served as his devoted care giver for the past several years, his two beloved children, Garland E. “Rick” Miller, Jr. and Cheryl L. Green and his sister, Freda Hott, all of Frederick County. Also surviving are the lights of his life; his five grandchildren: Devin Call and his wife, Laura, who are stationed with the U.S. Navy in Japan, Zoe Green, Benjamin Miller, Caroline Miller, and Adam Miller all of Frederick County. Their “Paw-Paw” attended every sporting event, art show, academic banquet, church event, or program they were involved in. He was determined to be there cheering them on. His eldest grandchild, Devin Call, and his wife Laura honored his grandparents by marrying on their 54th wedding anniversary. They will soon be parents to Mr. Miller’s first great- grandchild, a daughter, to be born in Japan later this month.

He served his community through many noble actions. His great love of animals led to a 20- year career as the Animal Control Officer with the Winchester Police Department. He was known for calming any creature he was called in to assist. His gentle nature and loving mannerism seemed to build a trust with animals. Serving on the Board of the Winchester SPCA was a privilege for him. His other community service included being a member of St. Paul’s on the Hill Episcopal Church, the Fraternal Order of Police, and the Izaak Walton League. He also served with the Winchester Rescue Squad.

“But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.” Philippians 3:20-21.

The family will receive friends on Monday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Jones Funeral Home in Winchester.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, March 3, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at Jones Funeral Home in Winchester with Chaplain Mark Ransom officiating. Following the service, burial will take place in the family cemetery at Fairview Lutheran Church in Gore, VA.

Memorial contributions may be made to Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 W. Cork Street, Winchester, VA 22601 or to the Winchester SPCA, 115 Featherbed Lane, Winchester, VA 22601.
