Obituary for Herbert Samuel Whyte

On Wednesday, August 31, 2022, Herbert Samuel Whyte, a beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather passed away peacefully in his sleep with his daughters by his side. Herbert Samuel Whyte, popularly known as Herb, was born January 4, 1941, in Colon, Republic of Panama, to Mary Ellen Greenaway Whyte and Edwin George Whyte, both of blessed memory.
Herbert attended the Rainbow City High School in Panama and after graduating, he migrated to the United States in 1974 for better opportunities. Herbert then joined the United States Navy and served on the USS Forrestal and USS Fessenden. Herbert made a career in the United States Navy and retires as a PO2-E-5 after serving 20 years. Herbert’s last duty assignment was the Navtelsysic Cheltenham, in Washington, DC. He was awarded the Natoinal Defense Service Medal, Sea Service Ribbon, Good Conduct Award, Navy and Marin Corps Overseas Service Ribbon, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, and many more.
After retiring from the United States Navy, Herbert became a Correctional Officer at the Greensville Correctional Center, Jarratt, VA where he worked for 5 years. He then transferred to the Coffewood Correctional Center, Mitchells, VA where he worked as the lead FTO in the Transportation Office retiring after 15 years of service.
Herbert was blessed with nine siblings, Patricia Bramwell Whyte (deceased), Edwin Whyte, Alfonso Whyte, Ricardo Whyte (deceased), Roberto Whyte, Adella McLaughlin Whyte, Maria Swaison Whyte, Rafael Whyte, and Edwardo Whyte.
Herbert left behind several children, namely, Herbert Junior, Celina, Rodolfo, Antonio, Lina, Rafael, Betzaida, LaSonya, Stephone and grandchildren, Kirk, Carlos, Edward, Gerald, Clarence, Marlina, Ezekiel, Anabeliz, Kathy, and other numerous great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, September 10, 2022 from 3:00 pm – 5:45 pm at Jones Funeral Home in Winchester. Military Honors will be accorded at 6:00 pm. The funeral service will follow until 9:00 pm with Bishop Jose Whyte officiating. Herbert’s remains will be flown to Panama for burial.
