Obituary for James Alan Maki

James Alan “Jim” Maki passed away peacefully at home on April 10, 2019, after a battle with mesothelioma. He was surrounded by his loved ones. Jim was 68.
Jim was born Aug. 29, 1950 to Reino O. Maki and Agnes M. (Denner) Maki, in Fort Eustis, VA. Jim traveled the world with his parents, from one military base to the next, until he came back to Virginia, in high school. He graduated from Hampton High School in 1968, and briefly worked in the naval shipyards in Newport News, VA before joining the Air Force and being sent to Vietnam, in 1970.
It was during the Vietnam War, that Jim began a correspondence with Rhonda Lane, a correspondence that lasted for three years and ended in their marriage on July 14, 1973, in Sacramento, CA, Rhonda’s hometown. They were married for forty loving years, until Rhonda’s death on Aug. 1, 2013.
Jim was a career banker, starting as a teller and retired as a senior mortgage lender, and worked for several well-known banks. He was also an avid ballroom dancer, and served on the board for Dance Club Shenandoah until his passing. He began a Ballroom Dance Club in his community, in his spare time, and delighted in teaching others how to dance.
Jim is preceded in death by his parents, Reino O. and Agnes M. Maki, and wife Rhonda P. Maki. He is survived by his loving daughter, Heather N. Maki, and son-in-law, Jason M. Krall. He is also survived by a son, Kevin J. Maki, and his family.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 22, 2019 at 11:00 am, at Green Hill Cemetery, Berryville, VA. In lieu of flowers, the family would like to request donations to Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 W. Cork St. #405, Winchester, VA 22601.
