Obituary for Mary Edna Martin (Hale)

Mary Hale (Brame) Martin, 96, of Winchester, VA, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 24, 2023.

Mary was born February 12, 1927 in Oklahoma City, OK, a daughter of the late Ronald Hartzell Hale and Cora Mae (Harrison) Hale. She graduated from El Reno High School, and attended Oklahoma Baptist University. She married Victor Brame in 1946 and together they relocated to Washington D.C. They had four children together, and moved to Damascus, MD. After Victor’s passing, Mary married William Martin in 1990. When he passed, she moved to Winchester, where she spent the rest of her days.

Mary was known for her strong Christian faith. She was very active in every church she attended and in church related groups, helping with Bible studies and Sunday school. She was a student of the Bible, a prayer warrior, and was always ready to witness her faith to anyone she met. She often credited her mother's influence in the development of her deep life of faith.

She was an avid reader and lifelong learner, reading one to two books a week even into her 90’s. She was a gracious hostess who loved cooking and people; especially her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren who loved her endlessly.

She is survived by her children, Donna Behrens (Ken), Karen Permenter (Andrew), Robert Brame (Karen); eleven grandchildren, Tonya Anderson, Kristin Timbrook, Kenley Brame, Andrea Sellars, Matthew Brame, Carter Brame, Alexander Permenter, Jordan Permenter, Victoria Permenter, Elizabeth Simon, Karli Schaffner; and twelve great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her son, Roger Brame; grandson, David Behrens; and her siblings, Allene Bollinger, Vivian Williams, R.V. Hale, Harry Hale, Joyce Potter, and Gene Hale.

The family will receive friends Saturday, September 30, 2023 at Jones Funeral Home in Winchester from 10:00 am to 11:00 am. A funeral service at 11:00 will follow with Dr. Andrew Permenter officiating. Mary will be interred at Mount Hebron Cemetery.
