Obituary for Mildred Jean Greenwell (Jones)

Mildred Jean (Jones) Greenwell of Suitland, Maryland passed away peacefully on November 21, 2022 at the age of 98 years old. She was born on January 26, 1924 in Alleghany County, North Carolina to the late Daniel Judson and Maggie Lou Black Jones. She was recruited by the U.S. Census Bureau shortly after graduating from Sparta High School and moved to Maryland with her sister Edna. She continued to live in Maryland and work for the U.S. Census Bureau until her retirement. In Maryland she met her late husband, Robert Paul Greenwell, a WWII Veteran and purple heart recipient. They married in 1947 and in 1953 had 1 child, Linda Ann who also preceded her in death.

Mildred valued her family, especially her daughter, son-in-law, granddaughters, and great-grandsons, and truly enjoyed spending her time with all of them. Mildred also enjoyed hosting whether it was a holiday meal or margaritas at the marina where she and her husband docked their boat. She loved shopping and could never pass up a good sale. In her retirement she and her late husband would spend their winters in Daytona Beach, Florida and summer weekends on their boat in Southern Maryland. Mildred also enjoyed drinking wine and would never miss out on an opportunity to have a glass.

In addition to her parents, husband, and daughter she was also preceded in death by her grandson Trent Allan Kohleffel; brother Walter Jones; and sisters Dorris Jones Greene and Edna Jones Styles.

She is survived by her three granddaughters, Jacqueline Dawn Kohleffel (Paul), Angela Rose Delle (Crispin), and Kristina Marie Schlueter. She is also survived by four great-grandsons, Trevor Wesley Kohleffel, Trey Daniel Kohleffel, Crispin Minudem Delle, and Theodore Aadaryeb Delle as well as her son-in-law Jeffrey Daniel Schlueter and several nieces and nephews.

A private visitation will be held on Friday, November 25th at 3:00pm at Jones Funeral Home in Winchester, Virginia. A graveside service will be held at a later date. She will be laid to rest with her husband at Arlington National Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers are Paul Kohleffel, Crispin Delle, Trey Kohleffel, Trevor Kohleffel, Crispin Delle, and Theodore Delle.
