Obituary for Richard Allen Bentley

Richard Allen “Dick” Bentley, 96, quietly slipped away on March 3, 2021, with his wife of 69 years, Carol, and son, Michael, by his side, at Hidden Springs Senior Living in Bentonville, VA.
Richard was born October 16, 1924 in Washington, DC, to Philip A and Freda M A (Scheffler) Bentley.
The family soon moved to Richmond, VA, and then to Roanoke in 1935.
He was a US Navy submarine vet of WWII and Korea. He graduated from Roanoke College in 1950.
He met Carol Jean Kelley while they were awaiting security clearance for the National Security Agency. They were married December 8, 1951 in Falls Church, VA.
Richard worked as an NSA analyst 1951 – 1993. He lived in Ashton, MD from 1961-2018. He was a Montgomery County Boys Baseball Association (MCBBA) and Olney Boys Club coach in Sandy Spring, MD; an avid bowler, and model train builder.
Besides his wife and son, he leaves his daughter, Ellen, of Prosser, WA; granddaughter Erica, of Chicago, IL grandson, Andrew (Sasha), of Richmond, VA; cousin, Betty Swanson, of Tennessee, and cousins in New York.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Hidden Springs, and from Blue Ridge Hospice, for care and support before and during his decline.
