William Henry  Louthan Jr.
William Henry Louthan, Jr. died on December 30, 2015, in Winchester, VA. He was born on July 12, 1923, in Chester, Pennsylvania, the son of William Henry Louthan and Emma Smith Louthan. He was a 1941 graduate of John Handley High School.
Bill married Catherine “Kitty” Josephine Carter in Winchester on May 19, 1942. Bill is proceeded in death by Kitty in 2004 and Thomas Alan Louthan, his son, in 2015. Bill is survived by his son, James Henry Louthan of Chesterfield County, VA, his daughter, Leslie Carter Louthan of Winchester, VA and daughter-in-law Shirley Miller Louthan. Bill has four granddaughters: Jennifer Ann Karvetski, Katie Carter Happel, Christine Faye Woolridge, and Brooke Ann Weeks. Bill has ten great-grandchildren. Bill is survived by his sister, Elsie May Bailey of Winchester and her two daughters Debbie and Joette.
Bill was awarded the Purple Heart as a result of the loss of his left arm during combat in France in 1944 while serving with the United States Army’s 2nd Armored Division, 82nd Armored Recon, Company C, in World War II. He later served as Commander of American Legion Post 21, and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Forty & Eight in Winchester. The American Legion awarded him Certificate of Continuous Membership of Good Standing for 70 years in 2015. An interview about his military service by Harold B. Following military service, Bill served as assistant manager of The Palace Theater and later The Capital Theater, for several years, before joining a local insurance agency. He graduated from the Glens Falls Insurance Company School and opened W. H. Louthan, Jr. Insurance in 1956. This agency merged with the R. Thornton Bryarly Insurance Agency in 1964 to form Bryarly & Louthan Insurance, Inc. After its merger with Goode & Johnson, Inc. in 1986 it became known as The Insurance Center of Winchester, Inc.
Bill was a lifelong member of the Braddock Street United Methodist Church. He formally served on the Board of Trustees, Pastor Parish Relations Committee, and as Chairman of the Official Board.
Bill was presented the Distinguished Service Award by the Winchester Frederick County Jaycees in 1959 for his community service.
He was a Past President of the Winchester Kiwanis Club. The Capital District of the Kiwanis Foundation, Inc. honored him in 1997 with the Life Member Award. The Winchester Kiwanis Club named him a George F. Hixon Fellow in 2009 and presented him the Legion of Honor Award for 55 years of perfect attendance in 2015.
Bill served as Chairman of the Boy Scout Troop 3 Committee at the Braddock Street United Methodist Church from 1958 to 1966 and again from 1969 to 1970. He was recognized by the Shenandoah Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America with the Scout Statuette Award in 1961 and the Silver Beaver Award in 1963.
Bill was a supporting member of the Judges Athletic Association for many years. He was known as an avid golfer, achieving 2 Holes in One at the Carper’s Valley Golf Club. He was deeply loved by friends and family, and gave the same love and joy back to others.
The family will receive friends at Jones Funeral Home on Monday, January 4, 2016 from 6:30 -8:00 p.m.
A Service Celebrating Bill’s Life will be on at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 5, 2016 at Braddock Street United Methodist Church with The Reverends Frank Sherman and Tony Layman officiating. A Burial Ceremony will follow in Mount Hebron Cemetery will full military honors.
Pallbearers will be: Dennis Boyd, Lyle Lumsden, Demetro Karvetski, Matthew Karvetski, David Newlin, Wayne Yowell and Skeeter Knee.
