Lewis Holler Ebert, 84, died September 19, 2015. He was born April 7, 1931 in the Ebert home place on Wellwown Pike to the late Isaac W. Ebert and Mary Holler Ebert. They moved to Winchester in 1932.
He graduated from Handley High School in 1949. Shortly after graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He was sent to Japan in July 1950 and then to Korea in September. He was with the 49th Fighter-Bomber wing. He returned to the states in February 1952. He was honorably discharged in Dec. 1952 with the rank of S-Sgt.
He worked at the Winchester Star from January 1953 to October 1981. He became Advertising Manager in 1963. After leaving The Star he was General Manager of the Clarke Courier in Berryville until 1993. He then worked at Grahic Service in Winchester.
He married the late Margaret A. “Peggy” Anderson on September 26, 1953. She died on September 10, 2001. He is survived by a son, L. Gray Ebert and a daughter, Ginger E. Dawson, both of Winchester; three grandchildren, Thomas F. Dawson, III (Andreana) of Fairfax, VA, Elizabeth E. Ayers (Jeffrey) of Romney, WV, and Emilebeth M. Ebert of Winchester and one great grandson, Asher Thomas Dawson. He is the last surviving member of his immediate family. His four brothers; John W., Lee A., Charles R., Douglas G., and sister, Frances E. pre-deceased him.
He was a charter member of the Wesley United Methodist Church and Shenandoah Chapter 313, Korean War Veterans. He also belonged to Winchester Moose Lodge 1283, American Legion Post 21 and the Friendship Fire Co. He was a past president of the Winchester Executive Fireman Association, Director of the Chamber of Commerce and served on the Winchester Downtown Development Board during the construction of the Loudon Street Mall. He volunteered as a Docent at Glen Burnie and helped at the Free Medical Clinic.
Arrangements are being made by Jones Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at Wesley United Methodist Church on Van Fossen Street on Thursday, September 24, 2015 at 1PM with Rev. Doug Geeting officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Hebron Cemetery with Military Honors. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, September 23, 2015 from 6-8PM at Jones Funeral Home, Winchester, VA.
Pallbearers will be Narce Caliva, Lew Ewing, Charles Hoak, Jack Kronenberger, Bud Robertson and Bill Scott. Honorary Pallbearers will be The Korean War Group Chapter 313.
